Concrete industry comments on Commission GPP criteria for Office Buildings

The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre is currently developing green public procurement (GPP) criteria for office buildings.

The document establishes the procurement criteria for office buildings (including design, site preparation, construction, servicing and management) and provides recommendations to the construction of new buildings as well as renovation of existing ones. Interested stakeholders had until 27 February 2015 to respond to the questionnaire. The European Concrete Platform (ECP) responded to the questionnaire, welcomin any initiatives which aim at promoting environmentally friendly buildings.  Nevertheless, in its response, the ECP also insisted on the need for consistency between approaches proposed by different units of the European Commission. In its comments, the ECP suggested that criteria on life-cycle assessment should take into account all life-cycle stages of a building, not just the embodied impact. In addition, it highlighted the need for a criterion on the responsible sourcing of all materials and calls for a criterion for fire safety in buildings.
